RESEARCH FIELD
Tamara Mikolič Južnič conducts research into various areas of translation studies and intercultural communication, with a particular interest in translation and interpreting in institutional and social contexts. Her research encompasses community interpreting, interpreting in healthcare and other public services, as well as linguistic accessibility and intercultural mediation. She also focuses on the history of translation, the sociology of translation, the role of translators as cultural mediators, and translator training. She focuses on the analysis of discourse and communication practices in multilingual environments, as well as on contrastive analysis between Italian and Slovenian. Based on empirical research into linguistic, translation and interpreting practices, her work raises questions regarding the social status of translators and interpreters, their professional practice and the development of translation competences.

TEACHING APPROACH
In teaching foreign languages, she adopts a communicative and learner-centred approach based on the active use of language in tailored, authentic and problem-based situations. She pays particular attention to developing all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing – and integrating them into meaningful communicative activities. In class, she uses adapted and authentic texts, various digital tools and modern learning resources, thereby encouraging independent and critical learning. An important component of her teaching is also the development of intercultural competence, as students learn about the cultural characteristics and communication patterns of the language they are studying. Lessons are based on collaboration, ongoing progress monitoring and reflection, and students are encouraged to use the language independently. She focuses her professional work on the region and its development as well as a wider area, while also encouraging and inspiring others to do the same. Her primary goal is to encourage and motivate students, and to present as many best practice examples as possible. Her lectures feature various guests who present different views related to the course topics, current events and development of society.
