international cooperation

As an educational and scientific research institution, the Faculty of Tourism is integrated into various international contexts – through international projects, scientific collaborations, events, partner networks, visits by higher education teachers and experts, and equally through student and staff mobility.

International exchanges are open to students, as well as lecturers and the faculty’s professional staff. Through the Erasmus+ programme, the Faculty of Tourism has agreements with more than 40 faculties across Europe. Furthermore, the faculty offers free of charge studies and scholarships at many Central and Eastern European universities through the CEEPUS network.

student mobility

Going abroad during your studies is a priceless experience. In the field of tourism, knowledge of foreign cultures and language is indispensable to building a career.
Conversely, the faculty hosts students from abroad who are in Brežice on an exchange programme. Visiting exchange students have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, discover the local environment and make new friends.

incoming Exchange students’ impressions

Lukas Deu, incoming undergraduate Erasmus exchange student
University: FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences; Austria

I was an incoming student at the Faculty of Tourism in Brežice from Oct. 2020 to Feb. 2021. Due to the pandemic I was not able to travel as much as I wanted to, but still was able to visit Ljubljana, Maribor, Novo Mesto, Bled, Jezero Jasna and the Kozjanski Park. I met a lot of very welcoming and helpful people from the faculty and was able to make new friends. I gained new social skills and was able to improve my networking knowledge. Furthermore I had the possibility to specify my studies in the field of tourism and was able to see the differences between Universities in Austria and Slovenia. I had a beautiful experience in Slovenia and can only recommend study in the charming town of Brežice.

To join the Faculty of Tourism means joining a family. The working spirit feels special and I was able to engage in some interesting discussions with the lecturers. The classes were very interesting and fun to participate in due to the high amount of practical work in classes (projects and seminar papers). After my stay in Brežice I am now even more convinced to work in tourism. The lecturers were really professional and taught me important information for my future career path. A lot of the new knowledge is directly applicable in the profession I want to work in.

Debora Gambaletta, incoming postgraduate student

University: Sveučilište Jurja Dobrile u Puli, Fakultet ekonomije i turizma "Dr. Mijo Mirković", Croatia

I was a student in my second year of graduate master's study, I stayed for 6 unforgettable months. I had the opportunity to meet new people from Europe and the world and exchange experiences, learn about other customs and cultures.

The Erasmus+ coordinator at Faculty of Tourism was very kind, available at all times and willing to help. I am sure to take advantage of this unforgettable opportunity that will surely change your perception of your life.

erasmus+ buddy exchange programme

The Faculty of Tourism organises the Buddy Exchange Programme (BEP) to welcome Erasmus+ students. The programme is carried out by our students, who help international students arriving in Slovenia or Brežice for the first time find their bearings.

International students receive a contact of their faculty buddy before they exchange, so they can connect before the student arrives in Slovenia. The task of the ‘buddy’ is to help the Erasmus+ student deal with everyday hurdles (e.g. public transportation, telecommunications, subsidised student meals, etc.) or any study-related questions (information on the course, study materials, lecturers, etc.)

As we encourage students to socialise, the ‘buddy’s’ other important task is to help introduce the student to other Faculty of Tourism students.

studying abroad

Studying abroad with Erasmus+

The Erasmus+ programme enables students to complete a part of their study requirements, at any level or cycle of study (including the preparation of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral theses, but excluding research that is not part of study requirements), at a partner institution abroad. Students may complete a part of their study requirements at partner institutions in Erasmus+ programme countries, that is, institutions which have signed the Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement on student exchange for that academic year and for a relevant field of study.

International students studying in English (part-time) study programmes can also go on an Erasmus exchange.

For more information on the Erasmus+ programme and assistance with application, students can contact Erasmus coordinator for students:

tomi.spindler@um.si

FT UM has around 40 Erasmus+  partner institutions in several  countries. List is available in the table below and here:

internships and traineeships abroad

Why not undertake a internship (work placement) abroad and learn first-hand how tourism works in other countries? Or gain your first valuable experience after graduating on a traineeship abroad? During their studies, students may undertake internship (a work placement) abroad, but the content of practical training must be agreed with the FT UM internship coordinator.

You can also do a traineeship abroad. One of the key conditions is that you still have active student status at your home faculty at the time of application, and that you undertake the mobility within 12 months of completing your undergraduate or postgraduate degree. For more information please contact Erasmus coordinator at FT UM.

incoming staff mobility

Staff mobility regardless beeing mobility for teaching or training is an integral part of our international strategy and can play an important role in relationship building with partner institutions.

If you wish to participate in staff mobility at University of Maribor Faculty of Tourism, the first step is to contact the international office at your home institution to ensure that you are eligible to apply for staff mobility and funding (for example, through Erasmus+).

The next step is to establish contact via e-mail with the Vice-Dean for International Cooperation at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Tourism, Assoc. Prof. Dr Mitja Gorenak (mitja.gorenak@um.si) who will help you plan your stay, including connecting you with a contact person in the appropriate department, processing the paperwork and answering practical questions.

Our aim is to provide you with the high quality mobility experience, for this we need sufficient time to plan all of the content together with you. Thus we are asking you to plan your mobility a minimum of 60 days before you would like to start your mobility with us.

We are looking forward to meeting you here in Brežice!

visiting lecturers and researchers

The Faculty cooperates with many international experts and strives to bring their knowledge to our students in lecture halls in order to stimulate new, fresh and up-to-date knowledge and insights into tourism. Visiting lecturers, experts and researchers from abroad are guests at our lectures, seminars and tutorials, as well as at research and professional gatherings of employees.

If you are a lecturer or researcher interested in visiting our institution, contact the Vice-Dean for International Cooperation Prof. Dr Mitja Gorenak at:
