Since its establishment, the Faculty of Tourism has worked to become a successful educational and research institution. Our research results rank us among the top academic tourism institutions in Slovenia. We have consolidated a full range of tourism study programmes, from bachelor to doctoral, and have created a truly international community comprising students from at least ten countries. Our visiting students, lecturers, and research partners have woven a strong and vibrant network, spanning from Japan to the USA and from Finland to New Zealand. Our researchers are very effective in obtaining project-based research and development funds. They have fostered strong collaborations with tourism companies and other organizations, enabling our students to gain work experience and tackle practical challenges. Faculty of Tourism graduates are highly sought-after professionals with competencies in various fields.
At the dynamic intersection of various research approaches, theories, and methods, we have developed modern study programmes with excellent rankings, deriving from sociological and critical research in the field of tourism. The academic programmes and research focus of the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor are not, therefore, rooted in a purely economic prism of studying tourism flows, the tourism industry, and the numerous impacts and managerial processes. Rather, we understand tourism as a complex social phenomenon stemming from the man’s need for self-realization, learning, development, belonging, creating, and more. Tourism, to our mind, is not merely a consequence of material wealth and the consumerist society, but rather, it is the original quest for and exploration of the mysteries of the human soul, of both the corporeal and virtual, real and imaginary, near and distant spaces. One must enter into all of these with respect and responsibility, which we consider to be the mission of our daily operations.
Pursuing the vision of becoming a top tourism-based higher education and research institution in this part of Europe, the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor operates as a community of all those who collectively strive to achieve goals in quality research and education, and internationalization, as well as those realising the broader mission and socially responsible actions of our institution. We promote collaboration and excellence, building partnerships with other educational and research institutions at home and worldwide, with industry, public, and civil society organizations, and other stakeholders.

about us

The Faculty of Tourism is a member of the University of Maribor and was founded in December 2009. The faculty is headquartered in the Posavje region, in Brežice, Slovenia.

The first generation of students enrolled in the University of Maribor Faculty of Tourism (FT UM) in academic year 2012/2013, and the first graduates successfully defended their theses in 2015.

Currently, we are implementing four study programmes: professional, academic, master’s programmes, with the first and last also being conducted in English and from 2022 also doctoral programme. Our fully updated and high-quality educational programmes are carried out by internationally renowned experts and lecturers with many years of experience in tourism.

All study programmes put great emphasis on work placements, which is a special feature of the Faculty of Tourism. All students from all study programmes can do work placement at some of the largest tourism companies in Slovenia and abroad, and can test and enrich their tourism-related knowledge in various tourism, public and student organisations.

Much of our effort is focused on research and co-creation of tourism both on the local and, increasingly, international scale.

In addition to quality assurance in teaching and research, we mainly concentrate on people – on quality interpersonal relationships, a personal approach and a collaborative study, research and employment environment.

purpose, mission, vision

PURPOSE
The Faculty of Tourism is a higher education institution, a member of the University of Maribor, whose fundamental purpose and aim is to nurture already existing knowledge as well as develop and deliver new knowledge in tourism in Slovenia.

MISSION
The Faculty of Tourism’s mission is to educate and train professionals to work at all levels of designing products, making decisions and management in tourism, ranging from operative to strategic planning and development of new capacities. These studies will of course provide the basis for the education of young researchers, who will master and proceed to develop new knowledge in this distinctly interdisciplinary sphere.

VISION
Our vision is to become one of the best higher education teaching and research institutions in the field of tourism in this part of Europe. We want to become a reference institution that will connect educational and research tourism institutions from the Western Balkans with Central, Western and Northern Europe, and serve as their academic point of contact.
