RESEARCH FIELD
Stu’s research primarily focuses on higher tourism education and its transformative potential. He also explores the intersection of tourism, recreation, and natural resource management. In connection with this, Stu has led several consultancy projects with Fish and Game New Zealand. More recently, Stu has begun investigating the role of technology in tourism—examining how and why different technologies are used, along with their limitations and potential. He is also exploring the feasibility of social tourism in New Zealand, particularly its ability to enhance access to travel for underserved populations while contributing to the development of resilient and inclusive communities.

TEACHING APPROACH
I see my role as a teacher being to help develop philosophic practitioners - graduates who have practical knowledge and understanding of the tourism industry and related fields (e.g., events, leisure) but who are also able to reflect upon and critique tourism’s broader relationship with/in society. I also believe it is very important for students, throughout their undergraduate and/or postgraduate tourism studies, to always be reflecting on their own roles and responsibilities for and within tourism. I believe that this ongoing cycle of reflection challenges students to think about how they might act, now and in the future, in best interests of society through tourism.
