RESEARCH FIELD

My basic education is in the field of informatics where I do the research in two areas: security / privacy and machine learning (classification). In the field of machine learning, I am interested in the learning process itself and its limitations - that is, where are the limits of the learning machine algorithms. In the area of security, I am interested in the privacy aspect and the use of passwords. Recently, I have been working on connecting these two areas and tourism, i.e. the digitalization and security in tourism.

My research work in the field of informatics has been published in many scientific journals, including the first journal in the field, such as the Journal of Medical Internet Research (IF 4.7), as well as in reputable journals Computer & Security, International Journal of human-computer studies and Informatics (Lith.).

In the field of tourism, I publish in the journals Lex Localis, Theory and Practice and Academica turistica: tourism & innovation journal.

TEACHING APPROACH

For me, the teaching is a constant process, not the final goal. It is the process how to teach the students to think, to collaborate, and conduct an active discourse with arguments. I like to include and involve history when teaching contemporary trends. The main goal of teaching is the ability of students to adapt to current conditions, i.e. the flexibility based on observation and discovery of patterns, and not on presenting facts that become obsolete in a few years, especially in technology.

The techniques and methods I use are a combination a traditional lecture combined with a discussion and critical thinking (analysis phase), followed by independent work of students in preparing solutions (synthesis phase). So not only are students able to understand the material, they must also know how to apply their understanding in a new situation, and also solve it with new knowledge and skills.

PERSONAL DESCRIPTION

Northern Finland: at minus 35 °C, sauna, and complete total silence in the middle of winter. South India: with its scents and inexhaustible human bustle. Western USA: California vineyards, redwoods, and Death Valley. East China and Japan: mysticism, society and not an individual.

And everything in between. Sea, sun, rain, snow, deserts; hills and mountains of the homeland. The whole world in the palm of your hand. Because of technology, we live in a beautifully connected world. But all the technology of this world does not outweigh the touch, the contact, the smile.
